What is tā Moko?
Tā Moko is the art of tattooing as practised traditionally by New Zealand Māori. The process is considered sacred, with mythological origins. Each tā Moko is unique and relates to the wearer’s identity and mana (spiritual energy or life force).
How does the process work?
Through tā Moko, aspects of a person’s inner being are expressed in visible form. This is a subtle process and best achieved through meeting in person. A consultation or kõrero is an opportunity to share ideas, background and other areas of relevance, and to discuss practical considerations such as size, placement, style and the time required.
How are designs created?
Following consultation, designs are drawn by hand on the body. This helps ensure optimal positioning and flow with the physique. Designs can be tattooed directly (freehand), or planned in advance via a drawing session, depending on preference and the nature of the piece.
Can people from different cultures wear tā Moko?
As a living art form that embodies ancient and universal concepts, tā Moko is a means of expression that many people can identify with. Inclusion is a core value in Māori culture, alongside awareness and respect, Ensuring one’s design is appropriate is of key importance in choosing to wear tā Moko.
Does the studio tattoo existing designs?
Existing designs may be used as inspiration or starting points, but not copied. Each piece is original and custom created in accordance with the above and other traditional design principles.
How long does a tattoo take?
This varies considerably depending on tattoo size (including body size), style, and the amount of detail. Larger works may take multiple sessions, allowing 2 weeks in between for healing, or they can be completed in stages over a longer period.
When is the best time to book?
The studio works by appointment only. All sessions and consultations must be arranged in advance. Consultations usually require up to 2 weeks notice; please enquire for current wait times for drawing and tattoo sessions.
What about hygiene and safety?
The studio is Health Registered and uses sterile single use needles, gloves and protective coverings for each tattoo. All inks are health certified and vegan. A medical history form must be filled out prior to tattooing, outlining any specific health conditions. Full aftercare instructions are provided.
How does costing and payment work?
The cost depends on the time required (see above). Estimates can be given in person only. There is no charge for initial consultations. A holding deposit is required when booking session time, which is deducted from the overall cost. Tattooing/drawing time is charged at a fixed hourly rate.
Is it painful?
This is different for everybody and depends on factors such as the area of the body, session length, physical condition and one’s state of mind. It is important to remember that tā Moko is an inner journey and through any pain we are able to experience deeper aspects of ourselves.
What can I do to prepare for my tattoo session?
Allowing the process of tā Moko to unfold naturally is in itself the best preparation. Try to arrive for your session well-rested, free of external demands, and to limit alcohol intake the day before.
Can I bring a friend/partner or family member?
A support person may be present for consultations and prior to tattooing; once the session is underway the tattooing area must be kept clear due to health and safety regulations.
Does the studio do cover-ups?
These are assessed on an individual basis to determine whether a cover-up is feasible and/or whether laser removal session(s) prior would be beneficial. The studio can advise on options and also works together with our resident laser removal specialist.
